Intersection Spotlight – Como Avenue SE & 15th Avenue

INTERSECTION(3)Como and 15th
Is it Dinkytown?  Is it Southeast Minneapolis?  Is it Como or Marcy?  This intersection seems like the crossroads to many Minneapolis neighborhoods.  The homes in the area are mostly converted duplexes for student living but some remain historical single family homes built in the early 1900’s.  Van Cleve Park marks the SW corner of the intersection if you like Minneapolis history here’s a blurb about the park’s beginning.

Screen Shot 2015-02-22 at 8.23.19 PM

Name: The name was adopted on May 15, 1893 to honor Charlotte Ouisconsin Van Cleve and her husband, Major General Horatio P. Van Cleve. Charlotte Van Cleve was known as “Infant Pioneer” having resided with her parents at Camp Coldwater, the predecessor to Fort Snelling, in 1819. Before the name was officially adopted, the park was referred to as Second Ward Park.

Como Importsindex_04
Adjacent to the park is Como Imports.  Como Imports is a favorite local shop of mine.  I’ve been taking my cars (imported and domestic) there since I was a student at the U of MN a million years ago. 😉  Como Imports has been there since the 70’s, ASE certified since 1981 and are good, down to earth, honest, Minnesota men.  They work with a lot of starving students so they know how to get your car running safely without breaking the bank.
Ask for Mark or Norm and tell them we sent ya, we’ll pay for your oil change!

Crescent Moon
Crescent Moon next door is known for their FOOTBALL PIZZA!  Its a Halal  middle eastern influenced pizza and YUM!  Don’t worry they also have a full menu for gyro lovers.  Stop in for a quick lunch or take it to go.  They have another location in NE Mpls on Central Ave.

Oaks Hardware
l
Oaks Hardware is next door to Crescent Moon. When you walk in there you will feel like Ralphie from A Christmas Story and its 1950.  Pat Clough is the owner and has been there for 46 years!!  I told them I was going to do a blog on them and they said “what’s a blog” OUT LOUD!  Apparently Pat’s daughter (who is internet friendly) and his son also work there to help dad out.  Don’t forget to give some love to Frankenstein the tiny dog who greets customers.  They are your neighborhood hardware store for keys, screens, windows and spare parts.  They have local landlord credit accounts there so if you live nearby your landlord likely visits Pat.

Gopher Nutrition
Gopher Nutrition sits next to Oaks, stop in and see Curt for a protein pick me up.  He will tell you his testimonial about his cousin who lost 200 pounds switching to his teas/shakes/meal replacements.  Herbalife is the brand name and they have a fantastic reputation for health, fitness and supplements.  With over 100 concoctions to choose from lunch has never been healthier.  ‘Students and athletes flock to the shop’ says the Minnesota Daily-news for students.  Check them out on Facebook for menu, hours and location.

Blacks Coffee and Waffle BarIMG_7274
Across the intersection from Como Imports is Black Coffee and Waffle Bar previously Muddsuckers.  In January 2014 they underwent a huge rebranding campaign and are now Black Coffee and Waffle bar.  Stop in for some Dogwood micro roast coffee and a specialty waffle.
Here’s what they have to say about their waffles:
“Our waffle batter and toppings are all prepared in-house using homemade recipes. Ingredients are freshly prepared each day. We also offer a daily selection of bakery items from Uptown Ovens. Every weekend we introduce a different specialty waffle”.  Find them on Facebook, Instagram and HERE.

Craigs
Craigs (since 2010) Como Barber, previously Pete’s Como Barber since 1909.  I think Oaks and Craigs are in cahoots.  This is another charming, old school shop that hasn’t changed since 1950.  When I stopped in every chair was filled with a man waiting for a trim.  Craig says his clientele are half students and half neighborhood regulars that have been getting their hair cut here since the beginning of time. They have 5 star ratings on yelp, yellow pages and google plus! Cash only folks.  No website but you can check them out HERE on youtube.com.

Obent-yaPhoto 10
Obento-ya is my favorite traditional sushi place in Minneapolis.  Unfortunately for you the reader I stopped in during the lunch rush so they didn’t have time to chat but fortunately for me my bento lunch was fabulous!  Check them out HERE.
This little nook in Como/SE/Marcy/Dinkytown offers so much diversity and its just a cool place to sit and people watch.  Unless you want to feel young and thin, then stay away from neighborhoods filled with college students because I swear those kids look younger every year!!

48th Street & Chicago Avenue S

INTERSECTION(1)Screen Shot 2014-12-10 at 1.24.25 PM

PART 1:
Located straight South of
Downtown Minneapolis,
48th Street and Chicago Avenue is an awesome intersection that is more of a mini-neighborhood than just a neighborhood.

Living within walking distance of this awesome area is highly desirable as the East Side of 35W tends to be more residential with fewer of these hubs of restaurants and shops than the very commercial Uptown, Eat Street, and Linden Hills neighborhoods on the West Side.
Welcome to the awesome
48th & Chicago!

Cornerstone Businesses
There are three main cornerstones in this neighborhood.  They have held down this intersection for years with delicious food and hangout options.

Pepitos Mexican Restaurant
PepitosSovereign Grounds
Sovereign Grounds has been roasting and brewing original green Arabica beans in this location since 1995.  A great coffee shop for reading or working, and their food is great too.  Revolutionary in thinking this coffee shop has a dedicated indoor playground, making it a busy local hang for moms and tots!

Turtle Bread – Pizza Biga – Cafe Levain
This is a delicious trio of go-to’s in South Mpls – you will find me at any one of these fantastic hot spots on a regular basis!  Oh, and did I mention they are all connected in the same building?
You can brunch, luncheon and dine on dinner all in the same building!
Turtle Bread

The “Up & Comers”
These businesses have been filling in and rounding out this neighborhood – all are worth checking out!

Bagu Sushi
photo 2Bagu is one of my go-to spots for quick and delicious sushi that is very affordable too!
They have cozy interior seating and a fantastic backyard patio that is a very zen spot for a glass of sake and a sushi roll with friends!
*Their menu also offers thai food for those non-sushi people.

Adrian’s Bar & Grill
Looking for a cold beer and a some classic bar food snacks?
Then Adrian’s is your place!
A great spot to play a game of darts and enjoy a pitcher of beer.

Town Hall Tap
Craft beer lovers take note!  Town Hall Tap is the place for you!
Some of my favorites at this fantastic tap room and burger joint are the fried pickles and Pete’s Cabin Burger – yummy!
During the summer months garage door walls open up to bring the outside in and the warm lighting and exposed beam ceiling make it an equally cozy winter spot.  Visit their website often to see what is on tap today!

Ken & Norm’s Liquor

On your way to a neighborhood bbq or dinner party and need a hostess gift or drink to share?  Stop into Ken & Norm’s liquor.
They steered me in the direction of a beautiful riesling (I don’t even like riesling!) to pair with a salmon dish I was preparing for a friend – so, not sure what to buy?  Ask!

Door County Sour Cherry -YUM!

Pumphouse Creamery
I have two words for you – rhubarb ice cream.
I will drive across town to pick up a quart of this dreamy treat when it is in season.  Cardamom is another fantastic flavor and then there is standard chocolate which is a dream.  This is a must-go sweet spot in South!

It’s A Dog’s Life
This intersection is home to a myriad of pet-friendly businesses!  As a dog owner (I am a little obsessed with my dog) I can tell you that both me and my dog vouch for these dog-spots!
Patrick Nau Photo Studios: Specializes in Pet Portraits!
Bone Adventure Pet Gear & Grooming: A great place to primp and pamper your pet & their toy selection is to die for!
Minnehaha Animal Hospital: This is a great place to bring your pet to keep that special family member healthy and in tip top shape!
Untitled design(4)
This is such a vibrant and packed-full intersection that we are going to have to do a PART 2 to feature the rest of the awesome spots – stay tuned for some fantastic shopping – salon/spa – flower shops and more!
Be back soon with more awesome shops for you to check out — Annalie

29th Avenue & Johnson Street NE

INTERSECTIONThis is my hood, these are my stomping grounds, this is what some call the “heart of Nor’deast”!  Ok, I know there are many hearts of NE Mpls but this section is dear to my heart.

Did you know there is a YouTube video called 29th and Johnson Street NE?
Check it out!

There are many staple businesses on this amazing intersection –
so we thought we would highlight them here!

Hazels
On the SE corner of 29th and Johnson is Hazels.  Be ready to wait in line for a weekend brunch, but don’t worry, it’s well worth the wait!
They have what you call SCRATCH, healthy, hearty and beautiful food. YUM!

Sarah Jane’s BakerySarah Jane's Bakery
Parkway Pizza

Parkway proudly sUntitled design(2)erves Sebastian Joe’s ice cream as well as NE’s best pizza!  They donate to local schools and even have elementary and middle students come in to make their own pizzas!
Every month at Parkway Pizza they get a new local artist to fill the walls with art. If you are interested in having your work displayed, or if you are a local musician who would like to play a set at one of our monthly art shows, please call Gail at 612-729-9090.  (They also have a Longfellow location!)

You are sure to find something one of a kind in this boutique, all items are new and have traveled from all over the world to be here in NE!

A Little reFind

Krista Tkach, owner, (she lives in NE too) just had her 6 month anniversary in this location!
Lets hear it for local small business owners like Krista-
whoot whoot!

This is another boutique, but here you will find locally handcrafted art, gifts, baby essentials and home furnishings.  It reminds me a little of “Truly” in downtown White Bear but local to NE!  Go on in there and support local businesses!

The Coffee Shop NEThe Coffee Shop NE

Need a massage?  Need a chiropractic adjustment?  Need to clear your chakras?  Need an insurance quote? Ok so insurance is NOT healing!
Stop on in to what I call the healing stop! Here’s what Mary Luger-Sartor says about her business:

I own the Massage & Healing at 2848 Johnson St NE, next to the coffee shop.  I have lived in NE for 28 years and have had my business here for over 13 years in a couple NE neighborhoods.  I love working and living a few blocks apart.  I have a wide range of experience to help people with many different stress and injuries to their bodies.  My other CMT’s are Liz Anderson and Jennifer Webb.  Along with massage, reflexology, and other bodywork, we have Dr. Maggie Tu, who does Chiropractic, acupuncture, A.R.T., and Access Consciousness. www.massageandhealingbymary.com

Travis Marcellus is the Farmers Insurance and Financial Services agent in this same building.  I didn’t get a chance to chat with him on the day I visited but wanted to give him an honorable mention anyway.

Northeaster Newshomelink
Where would we be without this little gem?  How would we know about all the art crawls and pedal pubs and microbreweries and live music without our friends at the Northeaster!

Washburn McGreavy Funeral Chapel
Onto the NE corner of our spotlight is Washburn McGreavy Funeral Chapel.  This has been a NE monument since 1963, and they have quite an interesting history on their website dating back to 1857 (click the name above to view their history)!  I did not go into visit them quite honestly because death gives me the willies, although I’m sure they have the utmost respect and integrity with our families left behind and loved ones beyond.

Dinsmore Cleaners
They boast they have been the NE launderers for 55 years!
They have two locations, both in NE,  and same day service.
Check out their website for coupons and specials.

The Hollywood Theater
HOLLYWOOD

The Hollywood Theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 5, 2014.[1] It was considered notable for its Streamline Moderne design by prominent theater architects Liebenberg & Kaplan and its association with the growth of locally owned, streetcar-accessible neighborhood cinemas during the Great Depression.[8]  They even have their own wiki page.  The last picture show at the Hollywood Theater in northeast Minneapolis took place 27 years ago. The building has been empty, but not forgotten, since then.  It is unclear what the future holds for this historic landmark, most recent news is Mpls sold it to Andrew Volna for $1 to rehabilitate it and find a “user.”

Thanks for reading I hope you will get out into your community and support some locally owned and operated businesses!  —Angela
